John was born either in 1821 or 1822

25 September 183-, the township board audited the towns accounts, amounting to $75.25 of which
sum the supervisors account was $2.00. At the same meeting of the board it was resolved to raise
the sum of $25.25 as a contingent fund for the township. The following have been elected to the

The first cemetery was located near the residence of Gideon Sanborn on the farm later
owned by Joseph Graves, as early as 1838. Prior to this the pioneers buried their dead
on their own premises.
After the incorporation of the ground, these remains were taken up and reinterred in the cemetery.
The first interment of an adult person was that of Mrs Israel Stiles who died in 1838. The first trustees of the cemetery were Cyrus Benedict, Israel I Stiles and Samuel Needham.

Education
Thompson and Farley corners, in the same district. On the 9th of May 1838, the inspectors of primary schools organized the township into four school districts.
No 1. was by the aforesaid corners, including sections No 1,2,3-10,11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
No 2. by Esquire Needham's comprising sections 4,6.7,8,9,16,17,18.
No 3. long known as the Foley-Bishop District composed of sections 19, 20,
21,28,29,30,31.32. and 33.
No 4. over South near Harrison Plants of sections 22, 23,24,25,26,27,34,35,36
Mrs Chapin taught the first summer term in District no 3 and Sidney Carpenter the first Winter school in the same district.
Sidney Carpenter and Norman Allen were the first school inspectors by whom reports were received from Districts 1,2, and 3 and by them filed with the county clerk 5 october 1838.
In 1876 there were seven school houses, six frame and one brick, the graded school of the Village, valued at $21,400.00 which afforded 650 sittings and in which schools were taught on an average of 7 and 2/7 months during the years end.
September 1st there were 507 children in the township of the requisite school age, between 5 and 20 years and 447 pupils attended the sessions of the schools.
There were 138 volumes in the district libraries.
Six male teachers were employed, who received for compensation $1735.00 and twelve females, who received $1032.00. The total income of the district $5,427.64 were expended including payments on bonded and other indebtedness.

Sam Cornell owned the place on Fourth Street where Ben Swihart lived then
George Watson. There were two children, Jinny and Fred Cornell...
The old house was moved in two parts to the east side of First Street. Walter Wiard lives in the one second from Eagle Street and Henry Miller lives in the second house on First Street with his wife Juanita. They are the parents of six sons. Geneva draws a line for the name of the first son and then names: Charles Miller, Hillsdale; Donald Miller, Benton Harbor; Edward Miller, Burr Oak; Max Miller, Burr Oak; Ramon Miller, Sturgis.

my notes: the street Geneva refers to as First Street here is in fact Third Street and the half of the house that Walter Wiard did live in has since been torn down and Walter's widow lives in a very nice mobile home on that lot for about twenty years now. Edward and Max Miller both remained in Burr Oak. Ed is since deceased but his son Gary still lives here. per Jo Garzelloni

teacher in Burr Oak High School and they have two sons; John Good , Jr. married
