Sophronia (GODFREY) MCNEAL/MCNEIL was living in Good Hart, Emmet Co., MI at the time of the 1880 Census. She was 65 years old and a school teacher living with her son in law, Edward COLE. Looking for information regarding Charles H PHILLIPS, born 1872, possibly in Petoskey. Father was Robert J PHILLIPS (a salesman, born in NY in 1844) and mother Eliza, (born 1847). Charles had a sister (b. 1868), and a brother (b. 1887). Charles married Jennifer CARTER, but left her and their son Robert to seek gold in the Klondike. Jennie later married Joseph STEIN and settled in LaSalle, IL. I believe that some of the PHILLIPS family in Petoskey later moved to Superior, WI.

Oct 21, 1938. Zilpha ROBERTSON born 1875 she worked on the Ann Arbor ferry from Frankfort, MI., Fred ROBERTSON born 1877, Ralph ROBERTSON born 1879, and Dudley born July 1884. Also, Henry ROBERTSON a brother of William P. ROBERTSON born June 1852, St. Lawrence County, NY. Henry's children: Arthur Henry ROBERTSON born Jan 1879, Charlie ROBERTSON born Aug 1880, Hattie ROBERTSON born Aug 1882, Olive ROBERTSON born Aug 1886, and Marlie Lucille ROBERTSON born April 1896. Family of 6 found dead in remote Michigan cabin July, 1968. Can you give me any info about this incident? The ROBISON family was from "Lathrup Village, Mi". The case is an unsolved crime. The town where the crime took place is "Goodhart", I think. There was very little information on the web page I found it on.

The last known location of the family is from a photograph of the 1897 class of the Depew School in Resort Twp, Emmet Co in which seven year old Wallace appears.

SANDERS (b. 1832, d. 1893 in Delaware Bend, OH) and married Susan WOODCOX on 7 Oct 1856.  They had the following children: George SANDERS, b. 1869, and twin Marion SANDERS, Benjamin Franklin SANDERS, b. 26 Sept 1862, William SANDERS, John SANDERS, Charles SANDERS, Josephus Alvin SANDERS, b.1862, James SANDERS, Edward SANDERS, and Malinda J SANDERS.  Several children supposedly moved to the Detroit area in search of work during the Depression.  Some worked at a mental hospital there. Son, Benjamin Franklin SANDERS, had the following children living throughout Michigan:  Joseph Franklin SANDERS, b. 1889, Roy Benajmin SANDERS, b. 1891, Albert Lawrence SANDERS, b 1893, Pearl Martha SANDERS, b. 1895, Mary Ethel SANDERS, b. 1897, Lawrence Ugean SANDERS, b. 1900, Arthur Gerald SANDERS, b. 1904, William Elger SANDERS, b. 1904 or 1905, John Paul SANDERS,b. 1906 and Frank SANDERS,Jr. Benajmin Franklin (Frank) SANDERS lived in Pellston, Emmet Co. Looking for any information on Charles and/or Emma Eliza (SHATTUCK) SHAW. They were married in Sparta, MI in 1875 and lived in Sparta, Alleyton, Lisbon, and Newaygo from 1875 until 1879-80 when they moved to Petoskey, MI. Charles died in Petoskey in 1899. Before his marriage to Emma, Charles was married to Mary Ellen (THORP(e)). They had 5 children; Walter SHAW, George SHAW, Melvin SHAW, Charles SHAW and Nellie SHAW. Mary Ellen (Ellen) died in 1874 in Alleyton, MI. Before her marriage to Charles, Emma Eliza SHATTUCK was a school teacher in Sparta, MI.

I am looking for STOLL and COLE families. The first is Frederick STOLL, born in Germany and came through Canada into Michigan. He died 23 Feb 1926 in Emmet Co., MI. Wife's name Catherine, died 5 May 1936. Some of Frederick's children were Henry, Clarence, William, Alice, Edna and Maude all born in Emmet Co. William has boys in Lansing. Henry was born Sept. 12, 1890 and died 1959 in Luce Co., MI. He drew social security and army pension. I am also looking for my GGrandfather, first name unknown, last is COLE. His daughter's name is Bernice COLE born February 22, 1897 in Emmet Co., died 1974 in Lambertville, Michigan. Bernice and Henry were married in Emmet Co. and they were the only one's to move to Chippewa Co.

Information UPDATE posted 20 Jul 1997: Fredrick STOLL born 1852 and his wife Catherine ???????? came from Germany to Canada to Emmet Co. MI. Children were William, Henry, Clarence, Maude (June), Alice and Edna. Any info on this family would be appreciated. Jasper COLE and wife Anna HIETT/HYATT lived in Littlefield Twp., Emmet Co. in 1897. Jasper COLE may have come from Scotland to New York to Emmet Co. Their children were Laura, Mable, Bernice, and Jim. I have nothing on the COLE family other than my Grand- mother Bernice COLE, any info would be very much appreciated.

SWARTOUT

Searching for info on Charles H. SWARTOUT or his family.  Wife was Lucy A. and children were Edwin A., William A., Eliza J., Charles A., Arthur E., Mary Estelle, Inez A. and Freddie A.  Charles and his family owned land in Emmet county beginning in the 1860's.  Charles is buried in the Cross Village cemetery.  He was born November 30, 1833 in Ithica, Tompkins Co, New york.  He died on November 12, 1887.  He was in the military and served in the 8th Michigan Infantry.  He originally was in Company F (enlisted on Sept 17, 1861) and then was promoted to 1st Lieut, Co H.  Then promoted to 2nd lieut. of the same Company. Finally, he was promoted to Captain of Company K.  He  mustered out on July 30, 1865.  He previously had lived in Prairieville, Barry Co, MI.  Sesrching for his middle name, parents names or wife's maiden name.  I believe his mother died about 1865 in Barry or Kalamazoo counties. I do not know if any of his family is buried near him.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I think my Great Grandparents lived in Charlevoix. SUDMAN was the last name. I think they all lived in Boyne Falls. Grandfather was a laborer. Would appreciate any information on them. PUYOT and LaVECK (LeVECK). Wanted: Any information on the following: My GGGrandfather was Anthony THOMPSON, dates and places of birth/death unknown. He was a lighthouse keeper on Skilagalle Island off Cross Village. His father (name unknown) had been a lighthouse keeper in England. Anthony THOMPSON married Margaret PUYOT (my GGGrandmother), date and place unknown. Margaret's father's first wife had died and Margaret was a child by his second wife (name unknown). Margaret had three half brothers and sisters: Mary PUYOT, Josette PUYOT and Pete PUYOT. Josette PUYOT was born in a canoe in Lake Michigan and Mary married a son of Chief PETOSKEY. Margaret PUYOT was from Cross Village and is buried there. Anthony and Margaret THOMPSON had a daughter named Louisa THOMPSON (born about 1903,) (my Great Grandmother) on Skilagalle Island. Louisa THOMPSON married my Great Grandfather, John LaVECK (LeVECK) about 1891 in Escanaba, MI. They had three children: Emery H. LaVECK, b 10 Jul 1892, Stella LaVECK, b 10 May 1894 and Jennie Louise LaVECK (my Grandmother), b 5 Aug 1896. All above information on the THOMPSON and PUYOT families is from a note written 25 years ago by a Great Aunt.

UNDERHILL

I am looking for information about the UNDERHILL family that may have lived in Emmet County around 1891.  Their son, Almarion UNDERHILL, fell from a tree while doing carpentry work in Harbor Springs in February, 1891.  He died in Old Mission, Grand Traverse County, but had not lived there for long.  He may have come from Emmet County.  His parents, too, may have lived there.  Any ideas?

VANSAU/VANZANT/VINCENT/VINSAU/VINSAW

I am searching for surnames from Emmet, Cheboygan and Mackinac County. Also searching LeBLANC/LaBLANC/LaBLANCE surnames. The LEBLANC family traveled along the waterways of Emmet, Cheboygan and Mackinac counties fishing. The family of Samuel LeBLANC ended up in Charlevoix, around Beaver and Garden Island. (Charlevoix County was then called Manitou County). Samuel LeBlanc went to Beaver Island, MI, USA and became a fisherman, then moved back to Cheboygan, MI. He died there and was buried on Bois Blanc Island, MI. I'd like any information on Samuel, Narsus & Celestine LeBLANC. PLEASE HELP! I can take Samuel LeBlanc's family way back- but next to nothing about his brothers - Narsus or Celestine LeBLANC. Have quite a lot of information - but still need to fill in missing parts.

WHEATON

I am seeking all descendants of Melville and Anne (HUNT) WHEATON for a book to be published, The WHEATONs of Northern Michigan. The family arrived as adults in the early 1870s in Charlevoix County from Ontario. In 1879 a homestead was taken out at Birch Point on the north arm of Walloon Lake. There were eight children in the family: Joseph R. (ten children), Mary Jane (married Alex MILNE, no issue), Sarah Ann (married George A. WARDROP, nine children), Elizabeth Martha (married Samuel H. SANBORN, four children), Charles M. (eight children), Katherine (married James P. FLASHMAN, seven children), and Andrew E. (twelve children). All the children and their families lived in the Charlevoix-Emmet County area. I am especially interested in finding descendants of Elizabeth and Charles .
